I Notice an Absence

I find myself in an awkward position

In need of a friend

Now, when for all these years I avoided

Unnecessary relationships

And was pleased to be alone

With my husband and my cat and

My collection of this and collection of that

My paintings, gardens, buttons, tinsel, a dog

A crowd of companions, almost

But not useful now when I need a friend who can take a walk with me

If my husband can’t, if the dog is dead.
