Birds

For many years I have looked at my body

In a full length mirror

Naked as a jay bird, the fat witchy kind, a

Roly-poly jolly plump pigeon with a gnarled beak

Like other black birds on this cold long night

Wishing I was instead an ibis, all plumes, or a swan

I cavort in front of the mirror, this solstice

Chasing away the dark

Look this way, that way, cast my witchy dark bird eyes

To the long night, to the bright stars

I suck in my belly and stand up straight

Push out my chest, lift my chin, look into the mirror

Cockatoo I think, lifting my arms

Dove I say, leaping into the air

Outside it is the longest night

And inside I am the brightest starling.
