When Katy was five years old
She was invited to a birthday party
At a real nice house
With chairs and rugs
Not like our bohemian dump
She needed a present for the party
So I made a doll, cut out a shape
Of cloth, sewed and stuffed and embroidered a face
In swirls of thread
Untwisted rope for hair, made a little skirt
My daughter walked into the party and smiled
Handed the doll to the girl
The girl looked at the doll and gave it back
Thanks anyway she said
That doll is sitting on my shelf
A little worn after 50 years but
Not bad.
After that I made a lot of dolls but this
Is the only one I still have.
