Eagle Eyes

We had a heat wave

Which means that the temperature rose above 35 degrees.

For the moment

The lake ice is melted patchwork

And as I look out the window

I spot two bald eagles

Standing on the ice edge stony still

Staring into the water

Waiting for an unwary fish swimming past

Unprotected

For the moment

By a shield of ice, and thus subject

For the moment

To the predatory ambitions of a bird

Who is unlikely to miss

In the moment.
