Rags to Riches

For a long time we were hippies

Living in the woods

In a tiny homemade cabin with

No indoor plumbing

Or electricity.

Then I went to law school

And Karl got a real job

We moved into a house in town where

Katy took long baths and

Slept in a real bed

In her very own room

A little frightened at the loneliness

At first

But brave as time went on.

When I got my first big paycheck

I bought her a pink angora sweater

Which was my signal

Of better days to come.
