From Before

I looked through a box of old pictures and

Letters and my father’s yellowed manuscript pages

For the epic play in rhymed couplets that he wrote

Back in 1937

And saved in an fiberboard suitcase until he died.

All kinds of things are in my box:

The belated birthday card I made for my mother

Back in 1962

A photograph of my daughter dressed up for the prom

With her date

Back in 1985

The second grade report card for my son

From 1993

A reliquary of forgotten times

Before my father was an old man

Before I was an old woman

Before my mother was dead

Before my children grew up

When we were all the most innocent of saints.
