I drive home from seeing Susie

took many back roads

had to unzip my tight

jeans — belly

bulged after lunch

of rich & savory roasts

fried potatoes & ice cream

we hadn’t met

for months — virus fear —

meantime she fell sick

from emphysema & got so fat she stuck in my car

door, Susie who was once

so beautiful & lithe

strangers dropped to their knees

on the street

to declare their devotion.
