Don’t Look Back

I say to my son who is a grown man

time to go home

back to a sensible cat

back to a house dense with personal

back to molecular basic.

We must give up this city

give up tomato bread cockles sausage

give up hotel room mysteries

give up hip hopping on cobblestones.

My son says it will feel good to be home

sleep in his own bed.

I say, but what about the crepes with vanilla ice cream

every evening and the sweet woman who greets me with hello mama?

What about your mango gelato? Plus

I know you will miss patting all those dogs.
